Shopify Image Optimization: Increase Sales with Faster Pages
In e-commerce, speed equals money. Amazon found that every 100ms of latency cost them 1% in sales. If your Shopify store has unoptimized product images, you are losing customers. Here is how to fix it.
The Ideal Shopify Image Size
Shopify recommends 2048 x 2048 px for square product photos. However, uploading these raw is a mistake. A raw 2048px image can be 4MB. You need to compress it to under 300KB.
JPEG vs PNG for Products
Use **JPEG** for standard product photos (clothes, furniture, people). It produces the smallest file sizes. Only use **PNG** if your product needs a transparent background. Never use PNG for standard rectangular photos—it will bloat your page size.
How to Bulk Optimize Your Catalog
Don't pay monthly fees for Shopify optimization apps. Simply download your product images, drag them into our Bulk Compressor, and re-upload. It's free and often more effective than automated apps.
Alt Text for SEO
After compressing, remember to name your file 'blue-running-shoe.jpg' instead of 'IMG_992.jpg' before uploading. Combined with our compression, this is a massive SEO signal to Google.
